How can we — and why must we — “green” the heart of education? How can we connect our classrooms, our school communities, and especially our curricula with the rest of Nature in ways that will green the hearts of our students? How might our life's work as teachers be different if a sustainable future (indeed, a livable future) for all children was its purpose? Via a green curriculum map, we'll journey through the simple yet urgent transformation that will allow us to show our students the courage and compassion they need from us in the face of the climate, oceans and biodiversity emergency.
As a sustainability education teacher and consultant, Julie Johnston works with international students at Royal Roads University in Victoria and with educators around the world through GreenHeart Education, an organization dedicated to promoting transformative education for sustainability and greening the heart of education at all levels. Julie’s master's research looked into barriers and enticements to sustainable development through environmental learning and action. She believes that a happy, healthy and sustainable future for today’s youth and all future generations – of all species – is possible, if we rekindle our inherent love for the Earth and Mother Nature, FAST.
